Spoke washers help to better adjust the hub's flex and dynamic oscillation. Their use is recommended for hubs with narrow flanges or dilated holes. These washers are placed on the spoke head before insertion into the hub, providing better retention of the spoke in the hole itself and preventing "hammering" and premature breakage caused by spoke oscillation on the hub. While not essential for wheels with all components properly designed or selected, they are very useful for addressing problems with spoke bends caused by dilated hub holes or hub flanges that are too thin or unstable under high load.
